2008- 2009 WORKSHOP PROGRAM

The following workshops and courses will either be held at our unit, Garngoch Workshops or at the Bryngwyn Centre, Gorseinon. We also take classes for guilds and groups at a venue of your choosing - see Page 2 for a list of available workshops and contact Fiona by e-mail fiona@ario.co.uk for further details. If you have a group but no venue and are prepared to travel, a workshop can be arranged at our unit, contact Fiona for details, dates, etc

The workshops held at the Bryngwyn Centre are being run in conjunction with Lifelong Learning program at Gorseinon College and are open to anyone with an interest in textiles, paper crafts and mixed media. All the workshops are suitable for all abilities (unless otherwise stated).

Quick & Easy   6 week course of 2 hour sessions to be held at our unit in Garngoch Workshops, during which you will learn how to use a selection of products. The products and techniques can be used singly or in combinations on textiles and papers, as backgrounds or embellishments. A design source will create a theme that will run through the sessions so that the final outcome will be a sketchbook full of samples and ideas.

Embossing Powders - stamp and stencil embossing powders on to papers and fabrics to create wonderfully rich surfaces.

Treasure Necklace £25

Design a one off necklace using "found" & made items. The made items will be constructed from mixed media products e.g. Gels, Tyvek, Textile paints, etc. to make handmade beads and artifacts. You will re-construct the "found" and made items into a contemporary and up to the minute accessory.

Lesson 2- Quick & Easy (6 week Course)

Stamping Fabrics & Papers - using handmade and commercially available stamps learn best techniques for achieving clear prints, subdued effects, partial images, backgrounds, etc.

Lesson 3- Quick & Easy (6 week Course)

Transfer Dyes - Create collages of coloured transfer dyed papers; use freezer paper as a resist; scrunch papers, etc and discover the wonderful effects that can be achieved on synthetic and natural fabrics.

Faux Leather Handbag £25

Do you know how versatile brown parcel paper can be? Using paints and waxes for strength, turn a sheet of brown paper into a piece of "faux" leather. You will be layering colours to create a coloured leather effect and using this to make up a bag, wallet and a piece of "bag candy".

Hot New Surfaces with Kim Thittichai £70

Experiment and develop new techniques with all the latest materials for surface decoration and 3D work. You will discover the joys of Lutradur, Heavy Pelmet Vilene Plus, Lamyfix and much more. We will be colouring and layering various products to create amazing textures and effects to stitch into by hand or machine.

Colouring Papers - Create papers as backgrounds for paper collage or for inclusion in textile designs by colouring, scrunching, distressing, using resist techniques,etc.

3D Medium on Fabric & Papers - learn a few simple techniques for using this expanding medium on paper and fabrics. Once mastered this product has endless possibilities.

Gesso on Paper and Fabrics - Usually artists use gesso to prime canvas but we will be using it to create some exciting surfaces on paper and fabrics.

Learn a simple and effective method of screen-printing for fabric and papers using greaseproof paper ad a window squeegee.

Transferring Images & Text for fabrics £25

You often find images and text that you would like to be able to transfer to fabrics, papers, etc. In this workshop, you will learn how to transfer text and images by a variety of methods. Final surfaces can be used to create book covers, panels, etc. Materials charge of £5.00 applicable.

Most of us are passionate about books, bags, etc., sometimes it is the shape, size, colour or decoration that evokes a response and by using paints, gels, found items, etc you can create a stunning one-off artifact that captures a particular mood or time.

Painting, printing and stamping are wonderful ways to decorate fabrics and papers. You will learn how to make your own printing blocks out of a wide variety of materials, create backgrounds, print and over-printing producing a richly layered surface.

Come along and learn how to make a hard back book that can be covered with a paper or fabric of your choice and contain a handmade, deckle-edged paper or smooth, cut edged cartridge paper block.
